The evidence
Specific probiotic strains have canine evidence for shortening bouts of diarrhoea and supporting gut recovery. Benefits are strain-specific and dose-specific, measured in CFU (colony-forming units), not milligrams — so the strain and count matter more than the weight of the powder.
How much does a dog need?
Probiotics are dosed by live count (CFU), not body weight. A common daily range is roughly 1–5 billion CFU for most dogs, higher during recovery. Look for a named strain and a guaranteed CFU count through the end of shelf life. Give daily — the effect fades when you stop.
When to skip it
Generally very safe. Immunocompromised or seriously ill dogs should only be given probiotics under veterinary guidance. Introduce gradually to avoid short-term gas.
